MUGA_K REDEFINES THE ART OF THE PIÑATA
The movement toward multisensorial and experiential formats of creating and experiencing art is visible in contemporary Mexican design, often incorporating ancestral techniques. MUGA_K by Juan Pablo Lascurain explores the “arte objeto.” The artist works primarily with paper-mâché and different ways of forming structures with the medium to create glorified piñatas.
The Mexico City native, who holds an architecture degree, started creating visual art after he returned to the capital from Tulum. What began as a stint in creating decorative forms in vibrant colors turned into a full-fledged exhibition during Mexico City Art Week this past February.
The exhibit “¡Te Invito a Tu Fiesta!” was a vibrant and fun experience: the show’s cornerstone was Juan Pablo Lascurain’s piñata-style wall, which invited people to engage with the artwork actively. Inspired by the mother figure, his other pieces included lamps and distinct space dividers, each echoing the transformative power of art and its ability to connect with our most intrinsic selves.
Many MUGA_K objects are available at one of our favorite La Valise Mexico City stores, “Originario,” conveniently located just a short walk from the hotel.
As you ascend the blue staircase at ORIGINARIO, you’ll find yourself immersed in a world that feels akin to falling down the rabbit hole—a space where art and imagination come alive.
